Summer Course 09 

The New University Cooperative is pleased to announce our inaugural 2009 Summer Short Course Program, being held in Nova Scotia, from August 1st to August 28th.

The theme of the course is Sustainability and Social Justice; Capacity for Social Transformation.

A full-time, residential program, the Summer Short Course Program combines a range of learning experiences to help students develop the skills and understanding necessary to be involved in movements for social transformation.

Directed by two resident educators. Wilma Van Der Veen, PhD, is an academic activist and professor of sociology at Okanagan College and a New University board member. Ted Rutland is a PhD candidate at the University of British Columbia. He has lectured at several Canadian universities, and writes frequently on issues of environmental and economic justice. The course also will be enlivened by guest lectures, field trips, community service learning, and workshops, the course also provides opportunities for hands-on learning in such areas as gardening/farming, carpentry, renewable energy, pottery, green building, art and music.

Core course content is structured around four sub-themes, including:

  • Non-violence, Power and privilege: From the personal to the societal
  • Movements for economic and environmental justice
  • Ecological lifestyle and community development
  • Sustainability and social justice education.

Each theme is explored through a variety of means: readings and discussions; talks from activists and educators in the region; hands-on skill building; practices of personal transformation; research and writing.

Costs of the program are on a sliding scale from $400 to $600 per student, which includes accommodation, organic, local and fair trade food, tuition, and transportation during the program. (Please note that as per the principles of the New University Cooperative, students with demonstrable financial need may apply for financial assistance.)
